Model comparison

Side hustle, gig app,or a business.

Junk removal as a side hustle, through a gig hauling app, or as a franchise. Three goals, three different businesses, compared without anyone's income claims.

Key takeaways

  • A side hustle and a gig app sell your time by the job. A franchise builds an asset you can eventually sell. They are answers to different questions.

  • Gig platforms publish their own figures about what haulers make. Those are the platforms' claims, not ours, and they are not verified here.

  • VETS is the wrong choice for someone who wants weekend money with a pickup. That is not a criticism of either.

Junk removal is one of the few trades you can start this weekend with a pickup, and gig hauling apps make it even easier to find the first job. A franchise is something else entirely: a full-time business with a territory, a fleet and staff. This page compares all three honestly, and is careful about one thing: it does not repeat anyone's figures about what any of them earn.

The side hustle

What it is. You, a pickup or a trailer, insurance, a few listings and word of mouth. You take jobs in the evenings and at weekends and decide the price yourself.

What it is good for. Testing whether you like the work, building a little capital, learning the disposal landscape in your town. Many full-time operators started exactly here.

What it is not. A business with an exit. When you stop, it stops. It also runs into the limits of one truck and one back quickly; the honest question is what you do when the phone rings more than you can answer.

The gig apps

What they are. App-based marketplaces that match haulers with customers and take a cut. They bring you jobs without marketing, set or suggest prices, and handle payment.

What they are good for. Volume without a brand of your own, and flexibility: you work when you open the app.

What to check. Who carries insurance on each job, how prices are set and by whom, what the platform's cut is, and what you are left holding if a job goes wrong. Gig platforms publish their own numbers about what haulers make; those are the platforms' claims, dated and attributable to them, and this page does not repeat or endorse them.

The franchise

What it is. A territory, a name, a system, a support team, trucks and crews, sold under a Franchise Disclosure Document for a fee and a royalty. Full time, from the first week.

What it is good for. Building a business that can run without you on the truck every day, that has accounts an individual cannot win, and that is an asset when you eventually sell.

What it costs. Item 7 of the FDD, every line, before you make a dollar. That is the real difference from the two options above, and it is why the franchise is the wrong answer for a lot of people asking this question.

Which one is which

If you want money this month and to keep your options open, start with the pickup or the app. If you want to find out whether you like the trade, the same. If you want a business with a territory, staff and an exit, and you have the capital in Item 7 and the time to run it, that is the franchise conversation, and it starts with reading the FDD, not with this page.

Why owners choose VETS

Whatever else you compare, these are the reasons owners chose VETS.

  • One owner, the whole metro. A VETS franchise is an entire metro area as defined in Item 12, with no carved-up sub-territories and no second VETS branch competing for the same jobs.
  • Three service lines from one fleet. Junk removal, dumpster rental, and commercial and multifamily waste services: more ways to put the same trucks and crews to work, across different customers and seasons.
  • National accounts you do not have to win yourself. VETS holds relationships with multi-site property management groups, and the work in your metro is assigned as set out in the FDD.
  • CentCom behind you. The corporate support team runs national accounts, receivables, the technology platform and training, and stays on the line after opening. Item 11 of the FDD sets out exactly what VETS provides.
  • Veteran-founded, led from the front. Built by an Army Engineer Officer from a single Charlotte truck, and the Charlotte corporate store is still the template every territory runs from.
  • Every cost in the open. Every figure on the investment page comes from Item 7 of the FDD, and nobody at VETS will sell you on an earnings number.

Questions people ask

Can I start a junk removal business with no money?

With a vehicle you already own, insurance and a listing, close to it, and the guide on starting a junk removal business walks through it without a franchise pitch. A franchise cannot be started with no money; Item 7 is the honest figure.

Is a junk removal side hustle worth it?

If the question is whether the work pays for the effort, only your own market and your own numbers can answer it, and no reliable published figure exists that applies to you. Try it for a month with your own truck and find out.
